Guitars Homepage
Ed has laid his L-09's to rest from touring. On the Blog, Ed mentioned this while
recording E2E:
A friend of ours from Taylor guitars dropped by
today to show us some of their new guitars. They have this revolutionary new acoustic
pickup system... it's killer. I may have to give my Larrivee's a rest. I've still
been playing my old ones a lot, but for live playing these new Taylor's leave
a pretty mighty wake. We shall see. We're taking the day off tomorrow.
He seems to have gone all-out - he bought many of them. Though I guess
for a guy like Ed, a few guitars isn't that all-out - it's a business expense
- tax writeoff time.
The first Taylors that popped up with Ed were the burst finish one, and one of
his natural spruce models. They were both used at the 'SARSFest' concert for Toronto.
I didn't notice he was using new guitars because the stage was very far from the
crowd at the Skydome. I noticed these later when I noticed the Taylors at other
shows.
The natural one at that show (used for Million Dollars) had 'Taylor' across the
top of the headstock, with no other inlay. It was tough to see it, but I believe
it was an 810 model. Or it could be a custom or older guitar, I can't be sure.
If you have the Special Edition E2E, this is the main one he plays during the
Acoustic set (I believe Take It Outside is the only song he uses another guitar
on). You'd think there'd be lots of shots of the guitar on the DVD, but there
are hardly any full shots. Strictly from a guitar player perspective, it's not
very well shot for that use.
The Sunburst guitar had the vine inlay on the headstock and what looked to be
the correct inlays for it to be a 910 model, with the Sunburst finish option.
I don't have photos of these guitars, but stock images of the inlay and headstock
are below. This seems to be the same guitar as he uses in the Postcard video.
The Walnut-looking guitar showed up when they did Postcard on Leno. It's dark
brown and easily distinguishable from the others. Taylor has a walnut series,
but only one of those guitars has a walnut top (and it's not the dreadnought).
This guitar matches the headstock inlay and for a walnut series guitar, so it
would seem to match a W10 model, except with a walnut top.
On Sharon Osbourne he used a different W10 with the standard spruce top, that
I've seen in recent tour photos. Interestingly both of these W10 models (body
made of Walnut) has a split of dark and lighter brown wood on the shoulder (see
the photos of each guitar that are tilted more towards the 'neck' end.)
He recently (at a NYC Borders bookstore show) showed up with what seems to be
a Presentation Series PS10. It has a distinctive headstock inlay, and a beautiful
vine inlay down the fretboard, and on the bridge. I'm not positive but I believe
this may be one of the guitars on a stand next to him on the DVD Acoustic session,
that he didn't seem to play.
The other guitar on the stand next to him he plays for Take It Outside because
the song requires a half-step tune-down. The guitar is a Jumbo size, with the
style of pickguard and headstock consistent with the 600 series (which would be
the 615). I have seen photos of him playing it at a radio show so I guess he's
also bought this one, or later bought one like it.
At a Christmas radio show the morning before Christmas '03, Ed played solo and
arrived with a nylon stringed Taylor that he he had purchased just two days prior.
He said he really loves them. I guess he's not kidding! I'm not sure which of
the NS series he had, but I believe it's an NS52ce (Mahogany). There are different
guitars in the '04 line, this would be from a prior line. It showed up on the
'04 Holidays tour for songs like Footprints and Snowman.
The last Taylor (the first one listed above) is a dreadnaught with the Koa soundhole
rosette, so that would make it either 510 or 710. The only major difference visually
between the guitars is the type of wood on the sides and back, and the tuning
pegs (silver or gold on the 510 and 710 respectively), neither of which I have
good photos of. I have a strong feeling it's a 710. The guitar is or was in their
B-Kit.
Given Ed's gushing over the new Taylor Expression pickup system, I would guess
that all of these guitars have the Expression pickup in them. I don't see any
controls on the body so I would guess he has the passive version of the pickup,
though that's just a guess on my part.
